Was Shot In The Head And Left For Dead, But all changed

Poaching is a huge issue that doesn't get nearly enough worldwide attention. There are monsters out there every day hunting down endangered gentle giants, just for the sake of monetary gain, with absolutely zero respect for life. Oftentimes these creatures are butchered for their valuable parts and left to die a slow and painful death, but sometimes the poachers are "merciful" enough to put them out of their misery. Well, for this special baby girl...she was graced with the latter...but that wasn't the end of her story.
This is Shongi, a baby rhino who was shot in the head by poachers and left to die.

After poachers killed her mother, they tried to wipe out this trooper, too.

Luckily, rescuers found her, and veterinary surgeon Kobus Raath was determined to stick by her side until she was 100% safe again.

He dressed her wound, making sure it wouldn't get infected, and cared for her just as a mother would. Shongi has grown very fond of her surrogate dad-mom, and she's doing surprisingly well, given that she suffered a traditionally fatal bullet wound.

Raath even helps her cool off after exercise with nice, refreshing mud baths.

The surgeon and his team are doing everything to ensure that Shongi will be able to make it on her own once she is released back into the wild...

And watching their process will really touch your heart.

According to Save The Rhino, close to 1,300 rhinoceros were poached in 2014 alone. In just a few short years, it's not out of the question that the majestic creatures won't be roaming this earth with us any longer. Learn how to get involved with the cause, even if it's just by raising awareness and sharing Shongi's story. After all, she is truly an incredible animal.
